Environmental Education

Rústica understands environmental education as a process to acquire new environmental knowledge through observation, awareness and participation. The aim of this process is to become aware of the environment and motivate people to get involved in the search of solutions to current problems, and prevent future ones.

At Rústica, we have designed environmental education programmes based on changes of attitudes and values. We make nature being understood as an educational notion, hoping for a sustainable development in human-environment relations. The environmental education should not be understood as a subject but as a transverse axis which must permeate the entire school curriculum.

Rustic designs, organises, coordinates and gives courses, workshops and interpretive walks and observation of nature as a form of approximation to our nearest environment. Our educational activities can be directed to formal education (adapted to the school curriculum) or to other environmental sensitive public who wish to deepen their knowledge (associations, municipalities etc), or who want to enjoy a different and innovative activity.

At the end of the section we present the rates of our workshops and courses.

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKSHOPS FOR CHILDREN

• Workshop introduction to the World of Birds
Birds are present in every moment of our lives. They are always around us: we see them when we go out to the street, in the city, in our village, in the field or wherever we go. But, how many times do we remain watching, trying to know what species we have seen, thinking about where they live, what they eat, or how do they elaborately design their nest?

• Workshop Preparation of Nest Boxes
One of the reasons to build a nest box is to help the birds, as large trees and old trunks are scarce and finding trees with holes large enough to breed and shelter are in shortage. Birds, in turn, return the favor to us eliminating a great quantity of insects that form part of their diet. Another important reason is the environmental education: place a nest box in the garden or in the still of the window and nature will be brought to us. With this activity we will achieve that the children learn to know and respect the nature around them.

• Homemade Bird Feeders Workshop
When winter comes with its cold temperatures, snow and ice, it has a negative impact on birds, which see insects, fruits and seeds disappear. Many of them decide to travel to warmer areas escaping from the cold, but there they encounter a similar problem. Preparing homemade feeders we guarantee their survival during the hardest months. We can also place them in our garden or balcony so diverse species will approach, becoming an attraction in itself.

Taller elaboración de cajas nido

• Nocturnal Raptor Pellets Workshop
The basis of an owls diet are small rodents, which are usually devoured completely. Most species use common roosts where great amounts of pellets are found. During this workshop we will discover the diet of some of the owls in our area and we will "investigate" to know what animals compose this diet.

• Tracks, Scats and other Traces Workshop
Unlike birds, mammals are very difficult to locate in the field and to think of the absence of them in the area: couldn’t be further from reality. Despite their cautious habits, mammals leave their tracks in the field, and their footprints in wet or muddy areas can serve us to identify the species of the area.

Taller de huellas y rastros

•Workshop "I know the trees that surround me"
It is important that from the earliest ages that children are aware of the importance of the trees. With this workshop they will learn to identify the trees of their most nearby environment, taking into account the forms of the treetop, habitat, soil, leaf and bark.

WORKSHOPS FOR ADULTS

• Introductory Workshop on Organic Gardening
Have you ever wanted to eat fruit and vegetables cultivated by yourself, but you've never had a garden to do it? Is there someone close to you, with a lot or a small piece of ??land but does not have time to cultivate it? Wouldn’t it be nice if they allowed you to use it in exchange for a portion of your harvest? The benefit would be mutual, and the two of you will eat free, healthier and fresher vegetables than those at the supermarket.

Taller de la huerta al plato

• Workshop of Natural Cosmetics

For a long time, the garden has been home to the original first aid kit. The place where you can obtain the remedies to recover from big and small maladies. The housewife was the one who treasured the knowledge that the ancestors handed down, always advised by the grandmother who was the one possessing the "experience". With this workshop we will try to recover former recipes of simple beauty products.

• Workshop of Identification of Aromatic and Medicinal Plants

With the aim to elaborate our own domestic remedies and the salves that our grandmothers were using, in this workshop we will learn to identify the aromatic plants, which are the most easily recognizable and accessible in our environment.

Taller de plantas aromáticas

• Workshop of Seeds and Seedbeds
If you have a garden and want to be more self-sufficient, in this workshop you will learn to extract seeds of the most common plants of your garden and to preserve them. Learn the steps to "wake seeds up", to germinate and to plant them on a seedbed where they will grow into a new plant that you will take to our garden.

• Garden Products Conservation Workshop
Blunt, freezing, vacuum packing, pickling ... These techniques have always been implemented in the villages, but this habit has been lost in most families. At times, they still do work, but with low health guarantees. This workshop will teach you some tricks to avoid dangerous poisoning such as botulism.

Taller de horticultura ecológica

• Saving at Home Workshop
The aim of this workshop is to reduce energy consumption at home, which will be reflected in electricity and water bills. Moreover, to ensure that a home is "green" you will also learn to make a responsible and sustainable purchase.

WORKSHOPS FOR RECREATION AND LEISURE

• Introductory to Fimo Workshop

Fimo is a moldable paste created by man, which, like natural clay needs baking to harden. With this paste, which is very similar to the clay, we can model our own "jewels": necklaces, bracelets, earrings, key chains... The only limit will be our own imagination.
