Interpretive Walks

Here you will find a brief description of our walks. We have separated them in different areas; if you need more information you can download the attached dossier shown in every walk. At the end of the section we detail the rates of the walks.

Atapuerca Surroundings

"Natural and historic crossroads"

Atapuerca is known overseas due to two World Heritages: its Arqueological Sites and the Camino de Santiago. This region has stunning natural resources and a very important historical legacy. The best examples for the Spanish history can be found in this area. Since Paleolithic times, to Celtic settlements, Roman Roads, its strategic location has made this area a historical crossroad. We have designed walks along concrete zones of high cultural and environmental value which combines diversity of landscapes, culture and ethnography of these lands.

Merindades region (Burgos province)

In the north of the province of Burgos spreads the Merindades region. In addition to a stunning natural frame, the area has an important historical legacy. Because of its ampleness, we have designed walks along concrete zones of high cultural and environmental value, and two thematic walks that include several areas. We recommend visitors the stay of several days in Merindades, combining several walks to enjoy the diversity of landscapes, culture and ethnography of these valleys.

Valdivielso Valley

"Birds and Romanesque at Valdivielso Valley"

Valdivielso Valley is a beautiful corner where the river Ebro has had to wade through Castilian moors and Cantabrian Mountains, resulting in beautiful landscapes. The confluence of the climates and the transitional nature make it an ideal place for bird watching.

Valle de Valdivielso

The scenery is completed with small villages spread along the valley, whose historical wealth has left us a rich heritage: hermitages, medieval causeways and the best preserved Romanesque jewel of the whole province: San Pedro de Tejada.

Valle de Valdivielso. El Almiñe

This route can be done in half a day choosing only a walk. Inside the route, several activities can be chosen in order to complete the route, in which case, the ideal would be to stay two days.

Merindad of Sotoscueva

"History, Legend and Art at Ojoguareña"

In this walk through northern Burgos areas, water is the protagonist. Through the centuries the water has been shaping landscapes and man has adapted to their way of life. Few areas combine history, legend and art as does the Ojoguareña karst complex.

Merindad de Sotoscueva. Arquitectura tradicional

More than 100 kilometers of simas, sinkholes and caves have sheltered inside human settlements since ancient times, giving places to several interesting archaeological sites and cave paintings. Outside, waterfalls, centenary oaks, small towns full of art and the long "shadow" La Engaña Tunnel speak for themselves of these enclave secrets.

Merindad de Sotoscueva. Fuente y puente en Valdebodres

You will decide this route duration. The ideal time to complete it is in a day or two days, being able to combine it with other walks along the Merindades. You can also choose any of the activities that we offer independently.

The impressive set of canyons that rivers Ebro and Rudrón go through constitutes one of the natural landscapes with more personality, richness and variety of ecosystems of the peninsula.

Thematic walks

"A walk with the hermits"

Hermits lived in loneliness. Their homes were small cavities that they would excavate in soft rocks, always placed at inaccessible and picturesque spots. These places would be the focal point of small hermit communities established around the ninth and tenth centuries.

Un paseo con los eremitas

From Olleros de Pisuerga in Palencia, to Presillas de Bricia in Burgos, following Valderredible Valley road, passing Alfoz Merindades and Bricia, travellers will discover the most diverse set of cave churches throughout the Iberian Peninsula.

Un paseo con los eremitas

Due to the impressive sight of these mountains and valleys which comprise limits of Cantabria and Burgos, the ideal length for the successful completion of this visit is to spend at least a full day in the area. This route can be combined with our other activities in Merindades, so the visit will be extended. Just let us know about your preferences and we will send you an offer according to your requirements.

Walk through the most representative hermits in the Cantabrian Mountains.

Un paseo con los eremitas

"Pasiegos: the last nomads"

In the limit between Cantabria and Burgos, in the valleys of the Pas river, there lived the descendants of the inhabitants of The Mountains of Burgos who, in the Middle Ages, harassed by the excess of population penetrated in a region of high mountain in search of new lands and pastures for his cattle.

Paseo de los Pasiegos

This character of high mountain territory, isolated and practically inaccessible, marked the contrast and the difference between people from Pas valley (pasiegos) and people who were living around them.

Paseo de los Pasiegos

On this tour you will be able to find out about the almost extinct “pasiega” culture: its origin, its evolution, visit their fields, their huts and live their traditions.

This region includes its extensive plains, "fields", in which the only prominent reliefs are the moors and the banks of its rivers. This is undoubtedly the best part of the province of Burgos for steppe bird watching as great bustard and little bustard.
Another important feature has been left by the human presence: Neanderthals, Celts, Romans and feudal traces have left an important historical past which can still be observed in bridges, aqueducts and mansions along with military and religious buildings.
